The American horror media franchise known as “Blair Witch” was founded by Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sanchez, released by Artisan Entertainment (now Lionsgate), and produced by Haxan Films. It consists of three feature films and various other media. The Blair Witch Project, the first entry in the series, began entered develop in 1993. A tale with unscripted dialogue was outlined by Myrick and Sanchez in a 35-page script. There were eight days of filming in 1997. In the woods outside Burkittsville, Maryland, three student filmmakers go missing as they work on a documentary about the “Blair Witch,” a local legend that is the subject of the movie.

The movie was released on July 30, 1999, following its Sundance Film Festival premiere and months of publicity during a contentious marketing campaign. Following the film’s enormous commercial success, Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2 was released on October 27, 2000. Blair Witch, the second authorized continuation, was made available on September 16, 2016. A number of video games, books, novels, and comic books have been published to go along with the movies.
