His grandmother’s house on Benaroon Drive, about 35 kilometers (22 miles) south of Port Macquarie, is direct across the bushland road from the Kendall State Forest. Tyrrell and his sister were playing hide-and-seek in the front and back yards between 10 and 10:25 a.m. on September 12, while his mother and grandmother sat outside watching them.

His mother went inside to make a cup of tea; after five minutes, she became concerned and began searching the yard and house. Soon after, Tyrrell’s father returned from a business trip to Lakewood and began searching the neighborhood and knocking on doors. His mother called 000 emergency services at 10:56 to report him missing, and police arrived at 11:06.
