Michael Joseph Piazza (born September 4, 1968) is a former Major League Baseball (MLB) catcher who played 16 seasons from 1992 to 2007. He is presently the manager of the Italy national baseball team. He was best known for his time with the New York Mets and Los Angeles Dodgers, although he also had brief spells with the Florida Marlins, San Diego Padres, and Oakland Athletics. Piazza was a 12-time All-Star and 10-time Silver Slugger Award winner at catcher. During his career, he hit 427 home runs, including a record 396 as a catcher, along with a.308 batting average and 1,335 runs batted in (RBI).

Piazza was picked by the Dodgers in the 1988 MLB draft as a favour to Piazza’s father by Tommy Lasorda. He was the final player in his draft class to be selected and signed to play in the Major Leagues. Originally a first baseman, Piazza switched to catcher in the minor leagues at the recommendation of Lasorda to boost his prospects of being promoted. He made his major league debut in 1992 and was voted National League (NL) Rookie of the Year and an All-Star for the first of ten straight seasons the following year. Piazza’s ability to hit for power and average instantly impressed. Piazza had his best season as a Dodger in 1997, when he batted. 362 hits, 40 home runs, and 124 RBI led to a runner-up finish in voting for the National League Most Valuable Player Award. He was dealt to the Marlins in 1998, then to the Mets a week later, where he spent most of the rest of his career. He helped the Mets win the World Series in 2000, his only World Series appearance. Piazza left the Mets after the 2005 season to play for the Padres and Athletics before retiring at the end of the 2007 season.
