The penultimate Communist prime minister of East Germany, Hans Modrow, reportedly passed away on Saturday at the age of 95, according to the hard-left Die Linke party in Germany. Modrow spearheaded democratic reforms that prepared the way for the unification of Germany.
Hans Modrow, 95, passed away last night. The party, which is the successor to the East German Communist Party, claimed in a statement that “with this, our party loses a huge personality.”
When he was selected as prime minister of a communist-led transitional government on November 13, 1989, four days after the Berlin Wall that had separated East and West Berlin for 28 years came down, Modrow pledged to aid in transforming East Germany into a democracy.
In response to calls for reform in Soviet-dominated eastern Europe, demonstrators in East Germany demanded democracy and independence after Mikhail Gorbachev came to power in the Soviet Union. As a result, the previous communist administration was overthrown.
Modrow organized the sole free election in the German Democratic Republic (GDRfirst) in March 1990, but it led to his resignation as prime minister.
Although he instituted reforms, his adversaries charged that he was attempting to thwart the political unification and revolution that occurred in October 1990. He faced criticism for attempting to reform the Stasi security police rather than getting rid of them.
