Merritt came to Minnesota after leaving Osage, Iowa, where he played high school golf at Spring Lake Park.

Prior to transferring to Boise State University after his sophomore year, he played college golf at Winona State University.

When he recorded a 62 (-9) in the second round of the District VII Shootout, he tied the school record for a low round score and was named to the first-team All-WAC for Boise State.

In 2008, Merritt became a professional.

On September 6, 2009, Merritt captured his first victory on the Nationwide Tour at the Mexico Open, taking home a $117,000 prize after defeating Australia’s Adam Bland with a 20-foot birdie putt on the opening hole in a playoff.

Merritt tied Cameron Davis and Joaquin Niemann for the lead at the Rocket Mortgage Classic in July 2021 after shooting 18-under par for 72 holes.

With a bogey on the opening playoff hole, Niemann was out.

Ultimately, Merritt bogeyed the fifth playoff hole, giving Davis the victory with a par.
