Kiedis was born to Margaret “Peggy” Nobel and John Michael Kiedis, also known as “Blackie Dammett,” in Grand Rapids, Michigan. His great-grandparents left Lithuania for the United States in the early 20th century.
Anthony’s paternal grandmother, Molly Vandenveen, “had a mixed ancestry that included the English, Irish, French, and Dutch (and, as we’ve lately found, some Mohican blood),” he wrote in 2004.
Kiedis’s parents split up when he was three years old, and his mother took him in and raised him in Grand Rapids. His mom divorced and remarried, having two additional kids after he was born.
For two weeks every summer, Kiedis would travel to Hollywood to spend time with his father. He reflected on the time he spent in California with his father, whom he looked up to, saying, “Those vacations to California were the happiest, most carefree, the-world-is-a-beautiful-oyster occasions I’d ever encountered.”
When Kiedis was 12 years old, he permanently relocated to Hollywood to be with his father.
