Anthony Bourdain was born in New York City to Gladys (Sacksman), a NYT staff editor, and Pierre Bourdain, a Columbia Records executive. Anthony attended The Englewood School for Boys in New Jersey, Vassar College (for two years), and The Culinary Institute of America. Anthony started out as a dishwasher in the food business and worked his way up through preparation to line cook, sous chef, and chef. His position as executive chef at Brasserie Les Halles in Manhattan allowed him to, in his words, “swan around the kitchen, taking credit for others’ work.” With his wife Ottavia, Bourdain shared a home in New York City and had a daughter named Ariane.

Bourdain initially objected to Jose Meirelles, the owner of Les Halles, who insisted that he use his full name, Antoine-Michel. Prior to managing kitchens at New York City’s Supper Club, One Fifth Avenue, and Sullivan’s, Anthony attended Vassar College, worked briefly in Provincetown, Massachusetts’s seafood restaurants, and graduated from the Culinary Institute of America.
