Kashyap was born in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh, on September 10, 1972. His father, Sri Prakash Singh, was employed at the Obra Thermal Power Station in the Sonbhadra district close to Varanasi and is a former Chief Engineer with the Uttar Pradesh Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Limited. His early education was completed at the Green School in Dehradun, then from the age of eight on, at the Scindia School in Gwalior. His former home, where he resided with his parents, sister Anubhuti Kashyap, and brother Abhinav Kashyap, served as inspiration for some of the settings in Gangs of Wasseypur. In the majority of his films, Anubhuti has worked as Abhinav’s assistant.

Kashyap decided to pursue higher education in Delhi because he wanted to pursue a career in science. He enrolled in a zoology study at Hansraj College (University of Delhi), from which he graduated in 1993. He later became a member of Jana Natya Manch, a street theater troupe, and performed in numerous street plays. The International Film Festival of India hosted a de Sica retrospective that year, as suggested by his handful of friends. He watched 55 movies at the festival over the course of ten days, with Vittorio De Sica’s Bicycle Thieves having the biggest impact.

Anurag Kashyap, an Indian actor and filmmaker best recognized for his work in Hindi cinema, was born on September 10, 1972. He has received many honors, including four Filmfare Awards. At her maternal home in Ooty, he later married actress Kalki Koechlin, whom he had first met while filming Dev D. “They are taking time apart from their more than two-year-old marriage,” Kashyap and Koechlin declared in 2013. They divorced in Mumbai’s Bandra Family Court in May 2015.
