Braj Basi Lal was born on 2nd May 1921. He was better known as B. B. Lal. Braj was a well-known Indian archaeologist. He lived in Delhi and had three children, all sons. Prof. B B Lal’s first son known as Rajesh Lal, is a retired Air Vice Marshal of the Indian Air Force Braj’s second son known as Vrajesh Lal and the third son, called Rakesh Lal, are both businessmen. They are based in Los Angeles, California. Dr. B B Lal died on 10 September 2022. He died at the age of 101.

Prof. Lal obtained his master’s degree in Sanskrit from Allahabad University India. When he completed his studies, Lal developed an interest in archaeology in the year 1943.

Prof. B. B. Lal when alive, published over 20 books. He as well published over 150 research papers and articles in national and international scientific journals across the world

Prof. Lal served as the Director General of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) from 1968 to 1972. He also served as Director of the India Institute of Advanced Studies, Shilma. Prof. Lal has as well served on various UNESCO committees because of his vast experience in archaeology.

The well-renowned Archaeologist Prof. Braj Basi Lal led an excavation at the Ramjanmabhoomi site in the mid-1970s. He was honoured with the Padma Vibhushan in the year 2021.
