He is the nephew of rally driver Antonio Sainz and the son of Carlos Sainz, a two-time World Rally Champion.
In 2012, Sainz competed in the British and European Formula 3 championships for Carlin.
Before joining Toro Rosso in F1, he won the 2014 Formula Renault 3.5 championship while driving for DAMS. Sainz completed his contract with Red Bull Racing and joined McLaren for the 2019 season.
Sainz won his first Formula One podium with a third-place result at the 2019 Brazilian Grand Prix. Sainz joined Ferrari at the end of the 2020 season.
Born in Madrid, Sainz started his career in karting.
