Marietta police swiftly arrested Donovan Carter, 33, in connection with the fatal shooting of 40-year-old Kenneth Cunningham II at Harlow Apartments in Marietta. Carter was apprehended during a traffic stop by Gwinnett County police on Wednesday night.

The incident unfolded on Wednesday around 10:30 a.m. when Cunningham, who was dating Carter’s ex-girlfriend, was lured out of his apartment. Posing as a delivery driver on Cunningham’s 40th birthday, Carter used a disguise to attract the victim. Subsequently, he shot Cunningham multiple times as he tried to escape.

Carter faced charges including malice murder, murder commission of a felony, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime. During his first appearance hearing on Thursday night, Carter acknowledged the charges filed against him.

The audacious act prompted Marietta Police Sergeant Chuck McPhilamy to highlight the premeditated nature of the crime. The shooting occurred at Harlow Apartments, near Windy Hill Road and Cobb Parkway, just two miles north of Truist Park and The Battery.

Responding officers discovered Cunningham with multiple gunshot wounds near the apartment complex office, and he was pronounced dead at the scene. Marietta police expressed gratitude for the collaborative efforts of various law enforcement agencies, including Cobb County 911 Center, Cobb County Police Department, Smyrna Police Department, Cobb County Sheriff’s Office, and the Gwinnett County Police Department.

Investigators swiftly identified Carter as the suspect through evidence, witness statements, and video footage, facilitating his arrest hours after the shooting. Carter, now held without bond at Cobb County Adult Detention Center, faced charges reflecting the severity of the crime.

The motive behind the targeted attack revealed a personal connection, as Cunningham’s relationship with Carter’s ex-girlfriend set the stage for this tragic event. The police’s efficient coordination and Carter’s quick identification brought a swift resolution to this disturbing case.
