Emily Swinkowski is 27 years old. In connection with the event, she is currently facing charges of enticing a kid and child exploitation, making her the latest accused teacher-student relationship gone wrong in the United States. She is accused of sending the 16-year-old girl nude images while she was a student at Water Valley High School, which led to her arrest.
According to District Attorney Jay Hale, another student discovered the graphic images and alerted the principal, which prompted police intervention. Then, last Monday, Swinkowski turned herself into the police and resigned from her job, obtaining her release on a $50,000 bail.
Former FBI Special Agent and CIA Officer Tracy Walder told Law & Crime that further incidents similar to this one might be caused by people starting their careers as teachers too early.
“I do wonder if part of it is this excitement of having that kind of power over an individual, which is pretty gross,” she said.
Across the country, there are still instances of inexperienced educators acting inappropriately toward pupils. In one such instance, from 2021 until 2023, Jessica Lawson, an Arizona native, aged 36, worked as a teacher at South Fremont High School.
District Attorney Jay Hale claims that after a separate student found the explicit images, they reported them to the principal, who subsequently called the police.
Police drove the minor home that evening after their initial interaction. But the boy’s parents gave officials more information the following morning. They stated that the teenager was picked up by Jessica Lawson on November 6 at 11 p.m. and driven to her home in Saint Anthony, Idaho. They claimed that following the teenager’s ingestion of drink and narcotics, Lawson and her had intercourse at her home.
