AFP associate commissioner Nigel Ryan highlighted the scope of Italian organized crime in Australia, including the ‘Ndrangheta,’ in a press conference on Tuesday.
He said that for decades, members of the notorious Calabrian mafia had been hiding out in the area, laundering money in secret.
According to police, up to 5,000 mafia members are suspected to be working in Australia in cooperation with their Italian counterparts.
Other organized crime groups, such as bikie gangs and Asian or Middle Eastern crime groups, engage with the Calabrian mafia in drug trafficking, money laundering, and violence.
They are led by senior members who have control over their clans, keep a low profile, and run businesses to give the impression of being legitimate.
Over many decades, these businesses have gradually legitimized the illegal money collected by organized crime.
“It’s entirely possible that people will be living next door to members of the ‘Ndrangheta without even realizing it,” Ryan warned. “By living modest lives in basic dwellings, they’ve managed to stay beneath the radar.”
