The International Gymnastics Federation on Tuesday handed Russian gymnast Ivan Kuliak a one-year suspension for flashing a “Z” gesture during a tournament in March. Kuliak wore the emblem on his leotard after earning bronze at the Apparatus World Cup in Qatar, according to Scott Gleeson of USA Today.

 

Supporters of Russia’s war in Ukraine have adopted the “Z” emblem, which has been painted on Russian military equipment.

Kuliak is not permitted to compete in any FIG-sanctioned event or competition conducted by an affiliated FIG member federation for a period of one year as of the date of this decision.

 

“If the precautionary measures that prevent Russian athletes from competing are still in place on May 17, 2023, the ban will continue and end six months later.” Kuliak has indicated that he has no remorse for wearing the letter, but that it represents peace rather than violence. He has 21 days to appeal the decision.

 

He also had to forfeit his bronze medal and his prize money.
