She has spent a very, very long time fighting against apartheid. She served as Nelson Mandela’s personal assistant, a member of the provincial cabinet for Gauteng, an envoy to Mozambique, and an ANC spokeswoman.
She advanced to become the ANC’s deputy secretary-general in 2012. At the ANC’s next gathering in 2022, Duarte announced that she would be leaving her position as deputy secretary-general.
