Prior to serving as Chancellor of the Exchequer under Liz Truss from September to October 2022, he was Secretary of State for Business, Energy, and Industrial Strategy from 2021 to 2022.

Who is Kwasi Kwarteng?

Kwarteng was raised at Trinity College, Cambridge, and Eton College. He was born to Ghanaian immigrants in London. Before running for office as an MP, he worked as a financial analyst and a columnist for The Daily Telegraph.

Sterling momentarily hit its lowest-ever level versus the US dollar on September 23 after Kwarteng unveiled a “mini-budget” that was roundly criticized. The shortest-serving post-war chancellor, Kwarteng was fired on October 14 after 38 days (Iain Macleod died in office). Jeremy Hunt was his successor.

At the Department for Exiting the European Union, Kwarteng was named Under-Secretary of State in November 2018. Kwarteng was appointed Minister of State for Business, Energy, and Clean Growth when Boris Johnson was chosen as the new prime minister in July 2019.

As part of this position, Kwarteng attends cabinet meetings. Kwarteng became the first black Secretary of State when he was appointed to the position in January 2021 after being upgraded to the business secretary.

Kwarteng backed Liz Truss’ campaign to lead the Conservative Party after Johnson resigned in 2022. Kwarteng was named Chancellor of the Exchequer by Truss when she took office as Prime Minister.

Friends have described Kwarteng as being “intensely private.” Prior to that, he was dating Amber Rudd, a former Conservative home secretary. In December 2019, he wed City solicitor Harriet Edwards. In 2021, their daughter was born. He previously resided in Bayswater and bought a home in Greenwich in January 2022. He belongs to the Garrick Club.
