He was born in 1973. His employment, which began in 2017, as the National Security Council’s Asia director, was exceptional among senior officials working under President Trump for its length during a period of heavy staff turnover.

Pottinger contributed to the formulation of the Trump administration’s China policies.

On January 6, in response to the attack on the US Capitol in 2021, Pottinger presented his resignation. The next morning, he left the White House.

Who is Matthew Pottinger?

Mattehew Pottinger is the son of J. Stanley Pottinger, a writer and former official with the Department of Justice.

He attended Milton Academy, where he was John Avlon’s classmate and childhood buddy. Pottinger has a Bachelor of Arts in Chinese Studies from the University of Massachusetts Amherst and speaks Mandarin with ease.

Pottinger wed Dr. Yen Duong in 2014; she is a virologist who escaped Vietnam with her family after the Vietnam War and moved to the US as a young child.

They reside in Utah and have two kids.
