Lorna Cordeiro was born in Saligao, Goa, on August 9 1944, to Cecelia and Teofilo Cordeiro as a third child in the family of three boys and three girls.

Cordeiro began her singing career by singing at weddings as part of ‘Bajaj and his Dance Band’.

She was recognized by musician, drummer and compère Raymond Albuquerque, who first heard her sing “Where The Boys Are” on Marvé Beach.

Lorna Cordeiro is known as Lorna in short known as Konkani language singer from the coastal state of Goa, India.

Her Konkani song instantly gave her fame, and people started knowing her as “Nightingale of Goa”.

She belonged to the ancestral house in Saligao is in Tabravaddo, and the family would often visit after they moved to Bombay.

Lorna belongs to the Goan Catholic community; Fr. Nascimento Mascarenhas, their immediate neighbour in Goa.

She recalls being very impressed by the family’s singing of Konkani hymns after the night of Rosary.

Lorna’s father always hoped that his daughter would someday become a famous singer.

She was born to her father Teofilo and mother Cecelia in 1944.

Cordeiro’s father came from a family of musicians, and he always encouraged his children in music and to speak Konkani at home.

Her mother, Cecelia, died on March 4 2002, a month after her 89th birthday.

Lorna Cordeiro death is a hoax and seems like baseless rumours. Reputed news agencies in India have not reported the singer’s death.

Furthermore, Lorna was awarded a lifetime achievement award from a TV channel in Goa on January 2, 2022

On this occasion, the ‘Nightingale of Goa’, Lorna Lui Cordeiro, was honoured with the lifetime achievement award for her contribution towards Konkani music.

The award comprising of Rs 1 lac cash, shawl, memento, fruits and flowers would be handed over by the bishop of Mangalore.

However, the singer is 77 years old and reported minor health issues in the past, possibly of old age.

Lorna Cordeiro was never married but had a relationship with Goan Musician Chris Perry.

Lorna admittedly was in an affair with an older married Goan musician, Chris Perry, working together.

However, following their breakup on her 27th birthday in 1973, she could not perform for nearly 23 years.

This was because Perry would threaten and even strike anyone who would approach her to sing professionally again.

Cordeiro began working as a compounder in a dentist’s clinic.

She was a victim of alcoholism before Ronnie Monserrate convinced her to start singing again in 1995.

Cordeiro now lives in Dhobitalao, Mumbai.
