A group of supporters in Madrid, Spain, created the Madrid Foot Ball Club on March 6, 1902. The club, afterwards known as Real Madrid, would go on to become the most successful European football (soccer) franchise of the twentieth century.

With its iconic blue-and-white outfits (influenced by an English team), Madrid made a reputation for itself in Spain almost immediately. Under its first coach, Englishman Arthur Johnson, the team won three consecutive titles in the Spanish League, known as La Liga, from 1905 to 1907. These were Real Madrid’s first of 29 La Liga victories from 1986 to 2006, including an astonishing five consecutive La Liga titles from 1986 to 1990.

Real Madrid’s international renown was cemented under the leadership of Santiago Bernabeu Yeste, who played for the club from 1912 to 1927 and was club president from 1943 to 1978. Beginning with Madrid’s most famous soccer classic, Argentine star Alfredo Di Stefano, Bernabeu began to build his team with the best players he could find from across the world, rather than merely the best in Spain, in 1953. From 1956 to 1960, the resultant team won the European Cup, Europe’s football title, an unprecedented five times in succession. Bernabeu then changed strategy in the 1960s, assembling a completely Spanish team. Real Madrid won its sixth European Cup in 1966 with a team of Spanish “hippies” who were as popular on the European continent as the Beatles.

Who is Real Madrid’s biggest rival?

Real Madrid has many long-standing rivalries, most notably El Clásico with Barcelona and El Derbi Madrileo with Atlético Madrid, as one of the three founding members of La Liga that have never been relegated from the top division since its inception in 1929 (along with Athletic Bilbao and Barcelona).
