He was born on October 28, 1944, in Tulsa, Oklahoma, U.S. Rob studied at The College of Wooster and in 1966 he earned a bachelor of science degree in business administration from the University of Arkansas.
In 1969, he obtained his Juris degree from Columbia Law School. He fled Tulsa to enter Walmart as a senior vice president in 1978 and was nominated vice chairman in 1982. On April 7, 1992.
