Prior to being elected governor in 2006, Crist began his political career as a Republican (GOP), serving in the Florida Senate from 1993 to 1999, challenging incumbent Bob Graham in the 1998 U.S. Senate election, and then serving as Florida Education Commissioner from 2001 to 2003 and Florida Attorney General from 2003 to 2007.

Prior to converting to the Democratic Party in 2012, Crist, 66, was the Sunshine State’s Republican governor more than ten years ago. The 44-year-old Agriculture Commissioner Nikki Fried was his main rival.
With 76.2% of the ballots counted, Crist leads Fried by a margin of 60.2% to 35.0%, supported by the Democratic establishment.
Democrats are under pressure to defeat DeSantis in the fall because he is allegedly laying the framework for a bid for the presidency in 2024.
