Ryukishi07 is the pen name of a Japanese writer and the leader of the band 07th Expansion. He is the creator of the Higurashi When They Cry, Umineko When They Cry, and Ciconia When They Cry visual novel series.

His pen name is derived from Final Fantasy, with “Rykishi” standing for “Dragoon” and “07” standing for “Lenna.”

Who is Ryukishi07?

Ryukishi07 was born on November 19, 1973, and will be 49 years old in 2022. Ryukishi07 attended an art vocational school and authored doujinshi while also enjoying anime, comics, and video games.

He attempted to create comics and novels while in college, but concluded that “no matter how passionate you are about something, without competence, you can never make it as a professional.”

He met a colleague from a theatre group who inspired him to compose a play called Hinamizawa Bus Stop, which he subsequently submitted to a contest and lost.

Yatazakura, his younger brother, recommended that he and Ryukishi develop their own sound book in response to the popularity of Type-visual Moon’s novel Tsukihime.

Hinamizawa Bus Stop was reorganized by Ryukishi into the episodic visual novel series Higurashi When They Cry. He aspired to be a video game developer after graduating from high school.

He concentrated on obtaining work as a video game maker, but he was unsuccessful. He started working at a menswear store, but after a few months, he accepted a preliminary offer for a civil service position based on the civil service test he completed during the job hunt.

Ryukishi07 work has been described as shifting between “macabre settings and schoolboy hilarity.” He has stated, “A tale should be like a roller coaster.

That is, before creating a very nasty moment, I must first elevate people’s spirits, for example, with a humorous sequence… Before creating a scenario of absolute despair, we must first write moments of hope. And, yes, all of this amuses me greatly when I write.” He has identified And Then There Were None as an influence.
