When accused of assaulting two journalists while they attempted to take pictures of him and Madonna in Nashville in June 1985, Penn entered a no-contest plea in October 1985. On each of the two misdemeanour charges of assault and violence, he was given a $50 fine.
After photographing Madonna and Penn as they entered in their hotel room, Leonel Borralho, Macao correspondent for the Hong Kong Standard newspaper, accused Penn of assaulting him in January 1986.
Penn was charged with minor violence in June 1986 after punching songwriter David Wolinski at Los Angeles’ Helena’s nightclub. Penn reportedly accused Wolinski of attempting to kiss Madonna. To the charge, Penn entered a not-guilty plea.
