15-year-old Janiya Carr was discovered dead in a tragic incident at an apartment complex on the northeast side of Indianapolis. The discovery was made by a woman walking her dog, who stumbled upon the teenager’s lifeless body along a tree line behind the Carriage House East apartments. As news of Carr’s death spread, it sent shockwaves through the tight-knit neighborhood.

Who is Tevis Walker?

Following the horrific discovery, 34-year-old Tevis Walker was arrested in connection to the fatal shooting. This arrest brought forth new details and raised several pressing questions about the circumstances leading up to this devastating event.

The case unfolded when police utilized surveillance footage to piece together a minute-by-minute timeline of the incident. According to court records, the footage reveals a series of events that eventually led to Janiya Carr’s death.

At 4:32 a.m. on October 28th, the surveillance cameras on Newburgh Drive captured Janiya Carr getting into a Kia registered to Tevis Walker. An hour later, at 5:21 a.m., another camera showed the Kia driving onto the grass, turning off its lights at the spot where Carr’s body was later found.

“The lights of (the) vehicle go off,” the court documents read. “Movement can be seen, but the view is not clear.”

Four minutes later, at 5:25 a.m., Walker allegedly parked the Kia in the apartment complex’s parking lot, located just a few hundred feet from where Carr’s body was discovered.

It was revealed that Walker had recently been hired as a maintenance man for the apartment complex, despite having multiple warrants for his arrest in Georgia and Alabama. This has prompted concerns about the thoroughness of the background checks conducted by the management.

In an interview with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD), Walker confirmed that the Kia Optima belonged to him and that he was the only one who operated it. He further stated that he remembered picking up a girl, whom he drove to a location several miles east to purchase a tablet. Unfortunately, the tablet’s seller did not appear, and Walker claimed he returned Janiya Carr to the apartment complex.

Despite the arrest, police have not provided a motive for the killing, leaving Janiya Carr’s family grappling with the torment of unanswered questions.

Tevis Walker was taken into custody on preliminary charges of murder and was transported to jail by an IMPD wagon. As of now, he is being held without bond, pending the formal filing of charges.
