Ponniyin Selvan is a well-known historical fiction novel. The novel is written based on true events that took place. The novel was written by an Indian author known as Kalki Krishnamurthy. He wrote the novel in the Tamil language. Ponniyin Selvan was initially serialized in the weekly editions of Kalki which is well known a Tamil magazine. The serialization started from 29 October 1950 to 16 May 1954. Later the novel integrated into five volumes in the year 1955.

The Ponniyin Selvan story revolves around a young man known as Vandiyathevan. He was a charming, brave and brilliant young man. According to the story, Vandiyathevan often sets out across the Chola land to go deliver a message from the Crown Prince named Aditha Karikalan to the King and the Princess. The story moves on to shuttle between Vandiyathevan’s travels in Chola country and the young Prince Arulmozhivarman’s travels in Sri-Lanka. The story points out attempts by Arulmozhivarman’s sister Kundavai to bring back her brother Arulmozhivarman to establish political peace in a land which was seemingly beset with unrest and civil war that was plotted by vassals and petty chieftains.
