Kawasaki engineers started working on a four-stroke engine for compact cars in 1962. The 250 cc single-cylinder OHV Meguro K1 and the SG were the next projects for some of the engineers who were then moved to the Meguro facility. To create Kawasaki Motorcycle Co Ltd, Kawasaki and Meguro combined in 1963. Kawasaki motorcycles featured an emblem from 1962 to 1967 that resembled a flag covered by a wing.

Kawasaki’s product sales surged in 1968 as a result of the release of the H1 Mach III and other enduro-styled motorcycles to compete with Yamaha, Suzuki, and Honda.
