Chesapeake Energy Corp. is an independent exploration and production company, which engages in the acquisition, exploration, and development of properties for the production of oil, natural gas, and natural gas liquids from underground reservoirs. It focuses on projects located in Louisiana, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Texas, and Wyoming. The company was founded by Aubrey K. McClendon and Tom L. Ward on May 18, 1989, and is headquartered in Oklahoma City.

On March 2, 2016, former CEO and co-founder Aubrey McClendon died in a single-occupant single-vehicle crash when he drove his vehicle directly into a concrete bridge embankment in Oklahoma City. It occurred the day after a United States Department of Justice federal grand jury indicted McClendon for violating antitrust laws during his leadership at Chesapeake. As of 2021, Doug Lawler resigned as CEO of the company, and Mike Wichterich, Chair of the Board of Directors, was named interim CEO. Moving to 2022, Domenic “Nick” Dell’Osso has been appointed as president and CEO.
