Fashionphile was established in 1999 by Sarah Davis, who did so while still attending law school. In order to grow the company, Sarah teamed up with her brother-in-law Ben Hemminger in 2006, and they relocated it to Beverly Hills, California.

The two started off selling used designer handbags on eBay, then in 2007 they started a website to market the goods. Sarah and Ben built their first retail location in Beverly Hills off Wilshire Boulevard and Rodeo Drive in 2008.

The expansion of Fashionphile prompted its subsequent action, which was to open a new store on Maiden Lane in San Francisco in 2009. The business relocated to its present Maiden site in 2011. It started operations out of a warehouse in Carlsbad, California, in 2012. The Silicon Review recognized Fashionphile as one of the 50 Best Workplaces in 2017.
