Snoop Dogg, the West Coast rap legend, has come a long way since being discovered by Dr. Dre in the early 1990s. Few could have predicted that he’d go on to global renown, tens of millions of record sales, and a career in film and television when he appeared on Dre’s The Chronic in 1992.
Snoop Dogg, a chart-topping hip-hop artist, was born Cordozar Calvin Broadus Jr. on October 20, 1971, in Long Beach, California. His mother gave him the moniker because he reminded her of Snoopy from the Peanuts cartoon. Before beginning rap in sixth grade, the musically minded teenager studied piano and sang at his local Baptist church.

Snoop was jailed for drug possession multiple times after graduating from high school and spent time in prison. He was also a member of the Rollin’ 20 Crips gang. He began composing music to escape his problems and made early tracks as 213 with his cousin Nate Dogg and pal Warren G.
Dr. Dre heard a tune on one of these and invited Snoop — then rapping under the name Snoop Doggy Dogg — to audition. They then cooperated on a song called “Deep Cover” for the soundtrack of the same-named film, and Snoop became the major rapper on Dre’s massively successful first solo album, The Chronic, in 1992.
