When the Den Hoorn brewery in Leuven first opened its doors in 1366, it was a tavern that served its own beer and made noise with a hunting horn. Sébastien Artois not only bought the brewery in 1717 and changed its name to Brouwerij Artois, but he also took over as chief brewer in 1718.

In place of the Christmas star, Brouwerij Artois introduced Stella as a seasonal beer in 1926. It was initially only available throughout the winter, but after exports to the broader European market started in 1930, it quickly became available all year round. During World War II, operations were stopped, and production was temporarily halted.

In addition to other nations, the United Kingdom and Belgium at the breweries in Leuven and Jupille, also produce Stella Artois. The InBev brewery in Belgium and Beck’s brewery in Bremen, Germany, produce the majority of the beer that is exported from Europe.
