Shinzo Abe, a former prime minister, was assassinated on Friday morning, shocking Japan and inspiring an outpouring of sympathy from all across the world.

After being shot at close range during a campaign rally in the western city of Nara, Japan’s longest-serving prime minister became unresponsive and subsequently passed away.

A 41-year-old former member of the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force was detained by police on suspicion of trying to kill someone.

In a country where guns are carefully controlled and political violence is relatively uncommon, Japan has struggled to deal with the assassination of Abe.

In a country where political violence is so uncommon that the last time a former or incumbent prime minister was slain was nearly 90 years ago, there was an outpouring of sympathy from Abe’s protege Prime Minister Fumio Kishida to regular people on social media.

“I am incredibly shocked,” Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike told a regular news conference before Abe’s death was announced, fighting back tears and sniffling audibly.

“No matter the reason, such a heinous act is absolutely unforgivable. It is an affront against democracy,” she added.
