Ptolemy XIII Theos Philopator [1] (Greek: o , Ptolemaos; c. 62 BC – 13 January 47 BC) was the Pharaoh of Egypt from the years 51 to 47 BC. He was also one of the final rulers of the Ptolemaic dynasty (305–30 BC).

His father had decreed that Ptolemy XIII would marry his older sister Cleopatra (r. 51–30 BC), and that the pair would govern together as co-rulers. This was part of the agreement that his father had made. Ptolemy XIII was elevated to the position of senior ruler alongside her in October of 50 BC; nonetheless, eunuch Pothinus continued to serve in that capacity for him.

 

He was the son of Ptolemy XII and the brother of Cleopatra VII, with whom he shared the role of co-ruler. After Cleopatra’s departure from Egypt, a conflict broke out amongst the many pharaohs that ruled the country. In subsequent years, Ptolemy shared the throne with another of his sisters, Arsinoe IV.
