Sujata lives in the Uruvela settlement of Senani ( near present Bodh Gaya) She was the daughter of a wealthy landowner and was gorgeous but unmarried.

She began praying at a nearby Nuga (banyan) tree near the Neranjara river on the suggestion of villagers who believed in a tree dwelling god who would grant her wish for a good husband who would shower her with love and gifts. It was eventually granted.

She went on to pray for a baby boy after that. This request was also fulfilled. On Veshaka day, she and her companion Punna would bring a milk-rice dish as a gift to the tree god (full moon). Sujata had a large herd of cows.

To acquire the most nutritional milk, she would feed her cows delicious creepers. This milk would be used to make rice-milk porridge.

Sujata became the Buddha’s first female lay disciple after he attained enlightenment and returned to the village.
