Tasha Butts, the head coach of women’s basketball at Georgetown University, died tragically on Monday morning. She spent two years fighting breast cancer with bravery. The 41-year-old Butts has left a lasting legacy in the realm of women’s basketball.

She was named head coach of Georgetown University’s women’s basketball team in April. Regretfully, the institution announced in September that Butts would be taking a leave of absence in order to give her health first priority. While working as a coach at Georgia Tech, she was informed in November 2021 that she had advanced-stage metastatic breast cancer.

Who was Tasha Butts?

Tasha Butts, a respected figure in women’s basketball, passed away on October 22, 2023, at the age of 41 after a courageous two years fighting breast cancer. Butts, a native of Milledgeville, Georgia, excelled as a player at Baldwin High School, winning awards like Georgia Gatorade Player of the Year and consensus All-American. She pursued her basketball career at Georgia Tech, where as a four-year starter, she was instrumental in leading the Yellow Jackets to the 2004 NCAA Tournament.

Butts joined the Minnesota Lynx of the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) after her time at Georgia Tech. She performed overseas as well, giving performances in Turkey, France, and Russia.

Butts made the switch to coaching in 2007 and began as an assistant at Tennessee. In addition, she had coaching positions at Duquesne, UCLA, LSU, and Georgia Tech. She was hired as Georgetown’s head coach in April 2023.

Apart from her abilities as a coach, Butts was also well respected for her positive attitude and steadfast dedication to her athletes. She served as an inspiration to young women everywhere, proving that anyone can overcome any obstacle and realize their dreams if they are determined enough.
