The National Hockey League was founded in 1917 to succeed the National Hockey Association (NHA). The NHA, which was founded in 1909 and began play in 1910 with seven teams in Ontario and Quebec, was one of the first major professional ice hockey leagues. By its eighth season, however, a series of disagreements with Toronto Blueshirts owner Eddie Livingstone prompted team owners from the Montreal Canadiens, Montreal Wanderers, Ottawa Senators, and Quebec Bulldogs to convene to discuss the league’s future. Realizing that they couldn’t force Livingstone out due to the NHA constitution, the four teams voted to suspend the NHA and form the National Hockey League on November 26, 1917. Frank Calder was elected as the NHL’s first president, a position he held until his death in 1943.

When the Bulldogs were unable to compete in the NHL, the remaining owners established the Toronto Arenas to compete with the Canadiens, Wanderers, and Senators. On December 19, 1917, the first games were held. The Wanderers ceased operations after the Montreal Arena burned down in January 1918, and the NHL continued as a three-team league until the Bulldogs returned in 1919.

The NHL took over as one of the leagues competing for the Stanley Cup, which was an interleague competition at the time. Toronto won the first NHL championship before defeating the Vancouver Millionaires of the Pacific Coast Hockey Association (PCHA) for the Stanley Cup in 1918. The Canadiens won the league championship in 1919, but the Stanley Cup Finals against the PCHA’s Seattle Metropolitans were called off due to the Spanish Flu epidemic. Montreal won its first Stanley Cup as an NHL member in 1924. In 1924-25, the Hamilton Tigers won the regular season title but refused to play in the championship series unless they were given a C$200 bonus.
