Tupac is seen as a symbol of activism against inequity, and much of his music has been praised for addressing current socioeconomic issues that affected inner cities.

Tupac was born in New York City to Black Panther Party members who were also political activists. He moved to Baltimore in 1984 and the San Francisco Bay Area in 1988 after being raised by his mother, Afeni Shakur.

With his subsequent albums Me Against the World (1996) and Strictly 4 My N.I.G.G.A.Z. (1993), Tupac continued to enjoy both critical acclaim and commercial success (1995).
