The engagement of Charles, Prince of Wales and Lady Diana Spencer was announced at Buckingham Palace on February 24, 1981. Charles married Princess Diana on July 29, 1981. St. Paul’s Cathedral hosted the fairy-tale wedding. On June 21, 1982, Prince William was born, eleven months later. After his father, William is second in line for the throne. Two years later, on September 15, 1984, their second son, Prince Harry, was born. Diana stated that she and Charles were closer than ever before in the months leading up to his birth, but the marriage fell apart after Harry was born. The fairy-tale marriage ended on August 28, 1996, when Charles and Diana divorced. Diana died in a car accident a year later, on August 31, 1997.
