About Mega Millions

Mega Millions (originally known as The Big Game in 1996 and temporarily renamed The Big Game Mega Millions six years later) is a multi-jurisdictional lottery game in the United States; as of January 30, 2020, it is available in 45 states, the District of Columbia, and the United States. The Virgin Islands The first Mega Millions drawing (The Big Game) took place in 2002; see below. What is now Mega Millions was originally available in six states; the logo for all versions of the game following the retirement of The Big Game name featured a gold-colored ball with six stars to represent the game’s initial membership, though some lotteries insert their respective logo in the ball.

Mega Millions is drawn every Tuesday and Friday evening at 11 p.m. Eastern Time, including holidays. Mega Millions is run by a consortium of its 12 original lotteries; the drawings are held at the WSB-TV studios in Atlanta, Georgia, and are overseen by the Georgia Lottery. John Crow and Carol Blackmon are the hosts.

The minimum Mega Millions advertised jackpot is $40 million, paid in 30 graduated yearly installments, increasing 5 percent each year (unless the cash option is chosen; see below for lotteries’ differences in cash/annuity choice regulations). When there is no top-prize winner, the jackpot grows. The jackpot is advertised as a nominal value of annual installments, as is common practice in American lotteries. When a jackpot winner selects the cash value option (the default), the approximate present value of the installments is paid. The previous format of Mega Millions began on October 19, 2013, with the first drawing three days later. Players must match 5 of 70 white balls and the gold-colored “MegaBall” from a second field of 25 numbers (5/70 / 1/25) in the current version of Mega Millions.
