Founded in 1993 in Paris by Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo, Daft Punk was a French electronic music duo. As a part of the French house movement, they rose to fame in the late 1990s by fusing house music with funk, disco, rock, and pop.

After their indie rock band Darlin’ split up, Bangalter and Homem Christo started experimenting with drum machines and synthesisers, eventually forming Daft Punk. Homework, their first studio album, received favorable reviews upon its 1997 Virgin Records release and was supported by the songs “Around the World” and “Da Funk.”

The trio became well-known and financially successful, and they are considered as one of dance music’s most important acts.

Beginning in 1999, Daft Punk adopted robot avatars for public appearances, concealing their identities with masks, costumes, and gloves; they made few media appearances. From 1996 to 2008, Pedro Winter, the CEO of Ed Banger Records, oversaw their management.

Why Are They Called Daft Punk?

The band chose the name Daft Punk when a British music journalist derided a Darlin’ song as “daft punky thrash.”
