The leaders of the biggest Protestant and Roman Catholic political parties in Northern Ireland, John Hume and David Trimble, received the 1998 Nobel Peace Prize today for their efforts to bring peace to the long-divided British territory.
Why did David Trimble win the Nobel Peace Prize?
The Nobel Committee in Oslo recognized Mr. Hume, 61, the Catholic leader of the Social Democratic and Labor Party, for being “the clearest and most persistent of Northern Ireland’s political leaders in his struggle for a peaceful solution.”
Mr. Hume, who represented the UUP in early 1990s all-party negotiations, was chosen as the Party’s Leader in 1995. He was the first leader of the Unionist party to consent to negotiations with Sinn Fein two years later.
