Roach, who was raised in poverty and was raised in Dedham, Massachusetts, has admitted that before joining the New England AAU ranks, he got into more than 300 street fights.
He trained under his father Paul Roach, who he admitted to abusing him and his brothers, and had 150 amateur fights. Roach was also a national celebrity with multiple Golden Glove victories. He also won the New England featherweight title, which his father had previously held in 1942.
Even with the help of renowned instructor Eddie Futch, “The Choir Boy” had trouble making the transition from amateur to professional success. Roach laced up the gloves despite showing early symptoms of Parkinson’s Disease, but eventually, he would have to call it quits. He quit the game with a 40–13 record.

Roach, who was known for his resilience under pressure, began displaying early signs of Parkinson’s disease late in his career. Futch asked Roach to stop fighting, but he refused and continued with his father’s approval. He went on to lose five of his following six matches before retiring at the age of 26.
