Olympic gold medallist Mikaela Shiffrin, who has taken home two of them, suffered yet another unanticipated setback on February 9 in Beijing when she withdrew from her second consecutive race.

After failing to pass through the fourth gate, Shiffrin was disqualified from the slalom event. The 26-year-old skied off the track after making the error and sat down in the snow for a considerable amount of time.

Why Did Mikaela Shiffrin Stop Her Run?

After winning gold in the giant slalom and the slalom at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang and the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, respectively, Shiffrin was the presumed favourite to win both competitions in Beijing. Broadcasters referred to her abrupt elimination from both races just seconds into them as “at the top of the list for all-time Olympic disappointments.”

“I won’t ever get over this,” Shiffrin asserted following the initial mistake, “I’ve never gotten over any.”

Shiffrin has won three overall World Cup crowns, three Olympic medals, and six world championships. She still has three competitions to compete in Beijing, and if she wins one more gold medal, she will have won more Olympic gold medals than any other American alpine skier.
