Cricketers have a number of strange habits that non-cricketers could find strange.

Rubbing the ball on their trousers, striking the pitch with their bats in between deliveries, and arguably more superstitious actions like kissing the ball before bowling are all examples of these traditions.

With all of this said, one common inquiry is “what is that strange substance on that player’s face or lips?”

People who watch cricket know about the white powder that cricketers use because it is frequently applied in a pattern to the face and/or lips of the players.

Why do cricketers have white lips?

The white cream that cricketers frequently apply to their lips is not paint. Zinc oxide is a ‘physical sunscreen’ that is sometimes referred to as a reflector.’

The reflector creates a powerful protective barrier that helps to shield their lips from the sun’s harmful UVA and UVB radiation.

Cricketers apply zinc oxide on their lips and, in certain cases, their faces to protect their skin from direct sunlight for up to 6 hours during a game.
