Why was ethereal Road scratched from the Derby?

According to the Daily Racing Form, trainer D. Wayne Lukas decided to scratch Ethereal Road, who was assigned the No. 20 post position for the Derby. Rich Strike will now begin from position 20.

Ethereal Road, a son of Quality Road, would have been Lukas’ 50th Derby starter. He’s won the Derby four times, the most recent with Charismatic in 1999.

Ethereal Road has a career record of 1-1-1 with a fourth-place finish in the Grade 3 Lexington at Keeneland on April 16.

Eric Reed’s first Derby starter will be Rich Strike. Rich Strike, a son of Keen Ice, has a 1-0-3 record in seven career races, including a third-place finish in the Grade 3 Jeff Ruby Steaks at Turfway Park on April 2.

Reed’s tactic for breaking out of the No. 20 position was to “get a good break and work your way across to the inside.” “Grab them on the backstretch and pass them all before the finish line.”

Rattle N Roll has been scratched from the Derby, joining Rich Strike on the list of horses who are also eligible.
