Due to disagreements over Jones’ interest in synthesisers against Gramm’s preference for harder-edged rock, tensions within the band began to arise in the late 1980s.

On September 1, 1983, Mick Jones left the band, marking the beginning of the end for the group, which would dissolve permanently three years later. It appeared like the fire had completely burned out inside of them, and the surviving members needed to find new pastures. Jones prevented the Clash from organizing a summer 1983 tour, and Strummer and Simonon were constantly irritated by Jones’ carelessness and lack of timeliness. In September 1983, they determined that the best course of action was to seize total authority and oust Mick from the band.
