As a member of the group Nero and the Gladiators, which had two small British hit singles in 1961, he started his professional music career in the early 1960s. Following the fall of Nero and the Gladiators, Jones worked in France as a songwriter and session guitarist for musicians including Françoise Hardy, Sylvie Vartan, and Johnny Hallyday (often known as “The French Elvis”), for whom he composed numerous songs, such as “Je suis né dans la rue” and ” tout casser” (which features Jimmy Page on guitar). When Sylvie Vartan, Hallyday’s girlfriend and future wife, performed on the same bill as them, Jones became friends with The Beatles during their 1964 tour of France.
