Yao was born weighing more than twice as much as the typical newborn in China. When he was nine years old, he started playing basketball and went to a junior sports school. He started out as a young player for the Sharks. He spent five years in the CBA playing for the senior team. In his last season, he took first place.
Yao Ming was chosen first overall by the Rockets in the NBA draft of 2002. Ming helped the Rockets win their first-round playoff series in 2009 and made it to the NBA Playoffs four times. Since 1997, they hadn’t won a postseason series until now. In July of that year (2011), he made his retirement announcement.
