Her mother was quite involved in her children’s upbringing. When M.A was seven years old, her mother, Latifa, chose to migrate to Chesterfield, Virginia because it had better educational facilities and would keep her children away from the violence of East New York.
M.A began writing rhymes in her schoolbooks at the age of nine, which she subsequently rap in 2001. Her mother urged her to buy a karaoke machine, which M.A used to put up a makeshift studio in her closet.
Young’s mother mostly played reggae and hip-hop music in the home, and as a result, M.A developed an affinity for the genre, which aided her in establishing a musical career. Her mother and uncle used to rap a lot, but they never made it a career.
