Yusra Mardini was born on March 5, 1998. Yusra is a well-known Syrian swimmer who currently lives in Hamburg, Germany. Yusra was part of the Refugee Olympic Athletes Team. Growing up as a small girl in Darayaan Mardini had a series of training in swimming. She as well got support from the Syrian Olympic Committee.
Yusra’s house got destroyed during the Syrian Civil War. Mardini and her sister named Sara left Syria in August 2015. The two went to Lebanon and later to Turkey. It was from there, the sisters decided to be smuggled to Greece via a boat with other migrants. The motor of the boat stopped working and they began to drown. Yusra and Sara along with two other people who were able to swim got into the water and pushed and pulled the boat through the water for over 3 hours until the group reached Lesbos where they landed.
