Levine says his family is “extremely musical” and attributes “starting me out on the path” to his mother. He also credits Simon & Garfunkel, Fleetwood Mac, and The Beatles, his mother’s musical influences, for influencing his musical taste, calling them “a significant part of my upbringing.”
Levine attended Brentwood School, where he made friends with Mickey Madden and Jesse Carmichael, who would later join his band. He continued to be interested in music in high school, when he claims he was “a bit disobedient I didn’t want to follow the instructions they were giving me, and music dominated all of my thoughts.”
